I’m a mother of 5. Each child has had my full attention for a few brief years when they were just toddlers, and then suddenly they were the big sister or brother to someone stealing their spotlight.
Each one, except Amy. My little Amy has been my full-time buddy for 3 and a half years now. It’s likely that she’ll never be a big sister to anyone except our dogs, never have a younger sibling to boss around. But honestly, she fills her role as “baby of the family” quite comfortably. After her 3 oldest siblings go to school, and her older sister heads off to Pre-K, we have the mornings to ourselves. Amy and I will snuggle together, or tackle household projects together, or she’ll be my “running buddy” while I fill up the gas tank or buy eggs or pick up the dry cleaning. We’ve got a unique bond, she and I. Maybe it’s because I’m the youngest of my siblings too. Whatever the reason, it’s nice to have this little person who loves me completely and who counts me as her best friend.
