Family events are all about family – hugging, sharing memories and creating new ones, laughing, relaxing, and having a wonderful time. The last thing anyone wants to do is remove themselves from the celebration because they are trying to load batteries into their camera, put it on the right setting, or stand somewhere that has the best light. Even if someone is able to capture beautiful images of the party, they are missing being truly present at the party. “I have to get a picture of that!” is always in the back of their mind. And if it’s not, the party usually ends with someone saying, “oh, I wish I’d taken more pictures. I got busy and just forgot.”
Parties are my thing! I love attending parties as a photographer. Whether it’s a graduation party, birthday party, baptismal celebration, family reunion, or any time when loved ones gather together, I really enjoy being behind the scenes and capturing every special moment. Sometimes the moments are subtle, sometimes they are obvious. Occasionally I will be asked “Hey can we get a picture together?” but most often I will photograph the interaction between the guests, watching their body language and their expressions.
I was hired for this graduation party last summer (talk about a belated blog post!) It was an important celebration, as the older sister was graduating from college and the younger sister was graduating from high school. The parents knew they would be welcoming lots of friends and relatives and did not want to bother with running around the party and snapping pictures. They wanted to spend the evening visiting with their guests and relaxing!
